What is a Neighbourhood House?
Neighbourhood Houses are welcoming, local spaces where people can connect, learn and contribute to local life. Each House is different because every community is different. Activities and services are developed in response to local interests, strengths and needs.
Neighbourhood Houses bring people together through affordable activities, learning opportunities, community events and practical support.
Depending on the community, a House may offer:
-
Social and wellbeing activities
-
Classes, workshops and digital support
-
Community meals and events
-
Playgroups, seniors’ groups and support groups
-
Food relief and links to local services
-
Community gardens and volunteering opportunities
-
A friendly place to meet others or simply enjoy a cuppa
They also help communities prepare for and recover from challenges, including bushfires, floods and other emergencies.
What does a Neighbourhood House do?

Volunteers
Volunteers are at the heart of Neighbourhood Houses. They share their time, skills and local knowledge in many ways, from helping at events and activities to running classes, supporting community programs or joining a committee.
Whether you can help regularly or occasionally, there may be a role for you at your local House.

Neighbourhood House sector
Neighbourhood Houses are part of a statewide sector that brings people together and strengthens local communities.
Regional networks such as EGNNH connect and support local Houses, encourage collaboration and represent their shared needs. We also work with government, councils, Neighbourhood Houses Victoria and other partners to help the sector remain strong and sustainable
